      Irwin Army Community Hospital (IACH) at Fort Riley is uniquely located in the rolling Flint Hills region of Northeast Kansas. Nestled between Junction City (pop. 25,000) and Manhattan (pop. 57,000).

      Responsibilities 

      • Performs phlebotomy techniques on patients using knowledge of human anatomy, aseptic technique, and selection of appropriate phlebotomy material (i.e., vacutainer, appropriate size of needle, syringe, butterfly, and lancet).
      • Prepares phlebotomy site for proper specimen collection based upon knowledge of blood specimen types, request forms, blood components, anticoagulants, tube selection and size, proper transport condition, testing criteria (i.e., fasting), and test procedures requested by medical staff.
      • Completes the proper forms and labels for the specimen ensuring the patient and specimen are correctly identified according to established policies.
      • Trains numerous laboratory students enrolled in AMEDD 68K Phase II Medical Laboratory Technician Program, new departmental employees and hospital staff in phlebotomy room procedures such as venipuncture (using both the system and butterflies) and capillary (both finger and heel sticks) and Bleeding Times.
      • Greets and screens patients at the Laboratory Reception Desk, obtaining information to determine need, eligibility of care and priority for testing.
      • Establishes and maintains record of patients of outside providers served and mails or telephonically reports results of completed laboratory testing to the outside physician

      • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
      • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
      • All Health Care Providers must be able to possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) Training and certification that is sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA). Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
      • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.

      Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.       Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience with technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings; or technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

      Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position of Medical Technician

      Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
